Doctor: Cold weather enhances asthma symptoms - News 12 Bronx

THE BRONX - For those with asthma, the winter weather can cause shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and a tight chest, according to doctors. The cold weather can bring on these symptoms of an asthma attack, making it even more difficult for those who have the disease.  The parents of 4-year-old Jace Blackman, who gets his asthma treatment at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, says the cold weather is a trigger for their son. Along with medication, Jace's parents make sure he is always warm in the winter. “When they breathe in, there is an inflammation that starts to take place, making it more difficult for them to breathe and then the lungs start to spasm; this spasm is what asthma actually is,bronchial spasms,” says Associate Respiratory Therapist Benita Joseph. Health experts advise those who have asthma to always get the flu shot, have inhalers and follow up with doctors. Along with the cold weather, Joseph says dairy products can also irritate ...

(AP) — A Connecticut soft drink maker known for its whimsical soda names is trying to make the bitter federal government shutdown a little sweeter. New Britain-based Avery's Beverages on Monday introduced its newest concoction, Shutdown Swill, and offered a free bottle to federal employees who stop by the plant. Owner Rob Metz tells WTIC-TV the drink is a mix of blue raspberry and orange, making it green, the color of money. He added citric acid for more bitterness. The label features a caricature of President Donald Trump. Avery's, founded in 1904, is known for its election year sodas, including Make America Grape Again and Hillary Hooch in 2016 and Barack O'Berry and Cream de Mitt in 2012. It also has a "totally gross" lineup of sodas, including Dog Drool and Monster Mucus. ___ Information from: WTIC-TV, http://www.fox61.com http://bit.ly/2VXbDtK

What teens need to know about long-acting reversible contraceptives - CNYcentral.com

Image
When it comes to sexually active teenagers, there's good news and bad news. The good news? Nearly 90 percent of teens ages 15 to 19 report using birth control the last time they had sex. The bad news? Less than 5 percent of those teens used the most effective type of birth control. According to the CDC , most teens use birth control pills and condoms; methods which are less effective at preventing pregnancy when not used properly. While no birth control is 100 percent effective, long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) are pretty dang close—less than one out of 100 women get pregnant each year with this choice. On the flip side, nine out of 100 birth control pill users get pregnant each year, while 18 out of 100 condom-only users conceive a child each year. Blame it on user error—every time you forget to take a pill or your partner puts a condom on wrong, your chance of getting pregnant skyrockets. That's where LARC comes into play. These "set it and forget it...

Bronchiectasis Symptoms and Diagnosis - News-Medical.net

Bronchiectasis is a chronic condition of the respiratory system that is due to abnormal widening of the airways as a consequence of an initial damaging factor. The bronchi, located between the trachea and the alveoli of the lungs, produce a small amount of mucus in physiological conditions, which aids in removing pathogenic particles, and ensures that the airways remain clean and moist. In bronchiectasis, the bronchi become permanently dilated and their ability to clear out excessive amounts of mucus is impaired. This leads to an excessive buildup of mucus, which promotes the growth of pathogenic microorganisms that cause recurring infections and lasting damage to the airways. There are a number of primary causes of bronchiectasis, including both acquired and congenital conditions. A large number of cases of bronchiectasis are classified as idiopathic, with no obvious underlying cause. Bronchiectasis can occur at any age, although it is more commonly acquired later in life, and it af...
