Vaccine Trial Shows Promise Against Candida Fungal Infection - WebMD

Image
March 29, 2023 – Infection with the fungus Candida auris can be problematic for some and deadly for others, especially for people at higher risk due to advanced age or because they have a weakened immune system, called immunosuppression. A vaccine in development could offer hope.  The major problem is not necessarily the fungus itself but a lack of treatment options. C. auris is resistant to two of the three major categories of antifungal therapies, and in some cases all three.  "It's the only true multidrug-resistant fungus that we have," said Ashraf Ibrahim, PhD, an investigator at The Lundquist Institute in Torrance, CA. He is also senior author of a new study evaluating how well the monoclonal antibody vaccine from Vitalex Biosciences could work to prevent or treat these infections.  Although relatively rare, C. auris infections can lead to death for between 30% to 70% of those at higher risk, said Ibrahim, who is a founder of Vitalex an...

TREM2 Protects the Brain From Herpes. The Virus Fights Back ... - Alzforum

Image
20 Apr 2023 Retroviruses lurking in the human genome aren't the only potential troublemakers in neurodegenerative diseases (see Part 5 of this series). Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) integrates into the genome of trigeminal ganglia nerves, can lie dormant for decades, and flare up as cold sores throughout a person's life. Infection with this virus has been epidemiologically tied to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. As more laboratories around the world are investigating the herpes virus hypothesis in search of mechanistic explanations for AD, one lab is now implicating TREM2 signaling. More epidemiological evidence links herpes infection to AD risk. HSV turns down the TREM2 pathway in microglia, hobbling the innate antiviral defense. Carriers of a C21ORF91 variant who get frequent cold sores are at higher risk of AD. ApoE4 helps HSV particles bud from host cells. The microglial receptor helps the cells fend off ...

Is a lingering cough after a cold normal? - UCLA Health Connect

Image
Common colds and viral infections typically clear up in seven to 10 days. But for one in four adults, a cough can stick around long after other cold symptoms clear up. It may leave you wondering if you should seek medical care, whether you're still contagious or if there's an underlying issue. "It can take the body time to clear out inflammation that occurs from an upper respiratory infection," says Russell Buhr, MD, PhD, a UCLA Health pulmonary and critical care physician. "But being proactive and knowing what to expect can put your mind at ease." What causes a lingering cough after a cold? Coughs that persist after a common cold or other upper respiratory infection are called post-infectious or post-viral coughs. They can linger for three to eight weeks after a viral infection.  There are two common causes of a post-viral cough in adults: Postnasal drip , when mucus drains into your throat Inflammation , or swollen airways,...
