Asthma is a common lung condition that affects people of all ages, according to the NHS.

It often starts in childhood, although it can also develop in adults for the first time.

The condition causes the airways to become sensitive and inflamed. This can make then become narrows and clogged with mucus when exposed to certain triggers.

Common symptoms of asthma include feeling tight-chested and coughing. But, you should also never ignore a whistling sound when you breathe.

Hearing a whistling sound when breathing could be one of the earliest signs of asthma, warned the NHS.

The noise could signal wheezing, which is linked to a difficulty breathing.

Wheezing may occur when both exhaling and inhaling, added the Mayo Clinic.

Any inflammation in the throat or airways can lead to wheezing, it said.

You should speak to a doctor if you develop wheezing without any obvious reason, or if it keeps coming back.

Difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, or briefly developing a bluish skin colour should also be seen by a medical expert.

The NHS said: "Most children and adults with asthma have times when their breathing becomes more difficult.

"Some people with severe asthma may have breathing problems most of the time.

"The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing [a whistling sound when breathing], breathlessness, a tight chest, and coughing."

The Mayo Clinic added: "Mild wheezing that occurs along with symptoms of a cold or upper respiratory infection [URI], does not always need treatment.

"Seek emergency care if wheezing is accompanied by severe difficulty breathing or bluish skin colour."

Every 10 seconds in the UK, someone has a potentially life-threatening asthma attack, according to charity Asthma UK.

Almost 1,500 people die from the respiratory condition every year in the UK.

Being aware of the signs and symptoms of asthma is crucial to lower your risk of an asthma attack.

The signs are more likely to be caused by asthma if they happen often keep coming back, or if they're worse at night and early in the morning.

They could also be caused by certain triggers - including exercise, pollen or animal fur.
