Image
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A 19-month-old girl from Cleveland died as a result of pediatric influenza, according to Cleveland Department of Health officials. This is the first influenza-associated child death of the 2022-23 season in Cleveland, according to a department press release. It's also the second death in Cuyahoga County following a 13-year-old boy's death in November. The girl was in the hospital when she died, officials confirmed. "The news of any death in our community is devastating; however, we recognize the poignancy of the loss of a child, especially from flu," CDPH Assistant Director Brian Kimball said in a comment. "We urge everyone six months and older to get vaccinated against the flu now, if you have yet to do so this season." Officials listed several precautions that can be taken to avoid catching any illnesses: Stay home when you are sick Avoid close contact with those who are sick Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when c...

Strep throat: What to know about Group A Strep this winter - USA TODAY

Image
Show Caption Hide Caption Experts explains how Strep A can affect children, adults Several children in the United Kingdom have died after being infected with Strep A. Here's what you need to know about the virus. Anthony Jackson, USA TODAY It's been an unprecedented start of the winter for those of us working on the front lines, particularly in pediatric emergency rooms and children's hospitals. After COVID-19 mitigation methods suppressed the usual seasonal surges from 2020 to 2021, the past few months have been marked by an uptick in RSV, flu and other respiratory viral illnesses in children. But there is good news. Nationally the rate of RSV has been declining since November. And influenza, which burst onto the scene two months earlier than usual, is now on the decline in many parts of the country; perhaps signaling an early peak to the flu season. And...

The Post-COVID “Immunity Gap” Continues to Pummel Pediatric Wards - The New Yorker

Annals of Medicine The Post-COVID "Immunity Gap" Continues to Pummel Pediatric Wards This year, a much larger cohort of kids—not just kids in the first winter of life but also older toddlers—are getting their first infections. Photograph by Christian Charisius / dpa / Getty  It's after 9 P.M ., and I'm with the pediatric night team in the children's emergency room at my hospital. We're admitting another toddler with a viral infection. The kid has the flu, or RSV, parainfluenza, rhinovirus, adenovirus, COVID , enterovirus, or some mix of multiple viruses—it hardly matters. She is coming into the hospital so that we can help her breathe. Tonight, as is the case in children's hospitals across the country, we don't have a room available in our ward for the new patient. She will stay in the emergency room overnight, but we pediatricians will take over her care so that the E.R. docs can focus on the other sick kids who continue to arrive. In recent ...

Does Green-Yellow Snot Mean You Have a Sinus Infection? - The Epoch Times

Image
Did you know that green snot doesn't always mean you have a sinus infection? Choose these strategies to lower your risk of an upper respiratory infection and other strategies to fight one. After you blow your nose, do you open the tissue and look? Although not many people talk about it, it's time to break that taboo and talk about the color of your snot. Snot is the everyday term for mucus that your nasal passages naturally produce. This mucus serves the purpose of trapping allergens, pathogens and dust that you inhale before they reach your lungs. Snot is sticky and loaded with antibacterial and antiviral proteins your body uses to fight off germs. A 2016 paper called it an "understudied host-restriction factor for influenza virus." 1  The mucus in your nasal cavity is made up of molecules called mucins that mix with water to form a gluey gel. Mucus is the first line of defense in the respiratory system. Each day, your lungs manufacture roughly 100 mil...

Farting Blood: 11 Causes, Treatments, Concerns, and More - Healthline

Image
Whether you call it flatulence, breaking wind, or passing gas, farting is completely normal. Most people pass gas anywhere from 5 to 15 times a day. But it isn't normal for blood to appear when you pass gas. If you have watery stools, passing gas can cause a wet fart. This is when a little liquid or mucus passes with the gas. Sometimes, a little blood can mix with this liquid, resulting in traces of blood in your underwear. Even though passing gas can sometimes indicate a serious health problem, some reasons for blood appearing when you pass gas aren't serious. Here's a look at 11 reasons why blood may appear when you fart, and when to be concerned. Chafing is a rash-like skin condition caused by friction when skin repeatedly rubs together. Chafing can affect the breasts, inner thighs, armpits, and the skin between the butt cheeks. Skin that's irritated from chafing can become inflamed, resulting in itchiness, redness, burning, and sometimes bleeding. When you pass gas,...

Acremonium (Sarocladium) periprosthetic joint infection: case report ... - BMC Infectious Diseases

Image
Fungal periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) have been reported to comprise only 1–3% of all joint infections, the majority of which are attributed to Candida and Aspergillus species [1]. Also, it is widely accepted that fungal infections are a hallmark illness of immunocompromised patients. However, it has been reported that nearly 40% of fungal osteoarticular infections are in apparently immunocompetent patients [5]. As with any unusual pathogen, cases should be reviewed for commonalities from services provided during the care of the patient to ensure no potential for epidemiological linkage within the healthcare system. No other causative factor was delineated in our case other than her traumatic fall ten years prior to her presentation. The occult infection dwelled over many years and destroyed the bone to the point where it could not support the prosthesis and subsequently led to component failure. Interim replacement without identifying the infection resulted in repeat failure...
