Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:39 PM PDT As the pandemic months pass by, our understanding of the novel coronavirus disease COVID-19 has been evolving rapidly. Now, the United State's Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has added three new conditions to the growing list of symptoms of COVID-19. The new symptoms are congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhoea. Now, the total number of symptoms of the infectious COVID-19 disease stands at 12. In April, CDC had added six new symptoms to the previously known ones, these are—chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and loss of smell and taste. The primary symptoms noticed since the outbreak in December 2019— fever, cough, and shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing— are still the main indicators of the severeness of the COVID-19 disease. The pandemic has infected more than one crore people worldwide. CDC stated, "This list does not include all possible symptoms. CDC will continue to update this list as we learn more about COVID-19." A recent study published in the journal PLOS One revealed persistent cough and fever to be the two most prevalent symptoms of COVID-19. The data were combined from nine countries, including the US, UK, and China. The results indicated out of the 24,410 cases, 78% experienced fever, making it the most common COVID-19 symptom. The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists the most common symptoms of the disease are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. As per WHO, the serious symptoms found are difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, loss of speech, or movement. The less common symptoms of COVID-19 include aches, pains, sore throat, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, headache, loss of smell or taste, a rash on the skin. On average it usually takes 5-6 days for symptoms to appear. However, sometimes the symptoms may appear even after 14 days of contracting the virus. In India, Indian Council of Medical Research has listed symptoms like muscle pain, mucous formation in the throat, clogged nasal cavity, sore throat, diarrhoea, loss of state, and smell. As of June 29, the novel coronavirus outbreak has infected 1.03 crore people worldwide, with about 5 lakh recorded deaths. Out of the total number of confirmed cases, nearly 26 lakh are from the US alone, while India has reported 5.66 lakh cases so far. ** For the latest news and information on the coronavirus outbreak in India and across the globe, check out our dedicated COVID-19 page. |
